Profhilo

Products come and go in aesthetics and whilst new treatments can be exciting I always retain a fair degree of skepticism until I’ve read the research backing up the manufacturer's claims and seen the results for myself.

Products come and go in aesthetics and whilst new treatments can be exciting I always retain a fair degree of skepticism until I’ve read the research backing up the manufacturer's claims and seen the results for myself.

Many of you reading this will have heard about or even been treated with Profhilo. For those of you who haven’t, Profhilo launched in the UK in 2016 and whilst it has become a huge success with millions of treatments now performed, for various reasons I hadn’t got around to having it myself.

Many of you will have some understanding about how and why skin ages. Put simply there are intrinsic and extrinsic factors involved. Intrinsic factors include our age and genes. Extrinsic factors include sun exposure, smoking, diet, hormone status, illnesses and medications. Signs of ageing skin include wrinkles, sagging, laxity, dullness, pigmentation (brown spots) and uneven texture.

Profhilo is a unique bio-remodelling treatment designed to address some of the skin changes described above. It differs from traditional skin boosters, mesotherapy and volumising dermal fillers and allows us to improve skin quality in a unique and way. Profhilo gel contains a high concentration of hyaluronic acid which once injected spreads within the skin. Profhilo specifically acts on fibroblasts (essential for collagen and elastin production) and adipocytes (fat cells). By nourishing and stimulating the skin patients experience improved texture, thickness and hydration. The results are incredibly natural!

As it is BDDE-free it is also extremely well tolerated. BDDE is an additive commonly used to link HA molecules together in dermal fillers and skin boosters and whilst it is extremely safe, it reduces the hydrating capacity of HA and can in rare cases cause allergy-type reactions.

For those of you who know me I smile a lot however over the last few years I’d noticed that when I smiled I had a whole load of lines appear all up the side of my cheeks. I ‘affectionately’ refer to these as accordion lines. These are notoriously tricky to treat as they are dynamic (caused by muscles contracting) but they are unsuitable for treatment with Botox. They are also not ideal for treatment with dermal filler. To be honest I wasn’t expecting much of an improvement in these lines but I have been really impressed with how they have softened after just one Profhilo treatment. My skin also felt thicker (on pinch test) and looked overall more dewy and plump. I LOVE it and can’t wait for my second treatment.

Profhilo can be used just about anywhere where there is skin thinning and laxity including the stomach, arms and hands although we tend to use it most on the face and neck. It’s suitable for most people over the age of 30 and is a quick and easy treatment with little down time. Profhilo is injected just beneath the skin, with the first two treatments spaced a month apart. After that we advise a maintenance treatment every 3-4 months. Patients tend to see results two weeks after the first treatment with maximum effects visible eight weeks from the initial session. Results vary between individuals and as always we suggest popping in for a chat to see if it’s the right treatment for you.
