If you’re considering dermal filler for the first time, remember that skillfully applied filler gives the face a subtle definition, lift or increase in volume (lips or cheeks for instance), where ageing or nature may mean you’d like a gentle boost.

You won’t necessarily know who has had it done if it’s done well and the patient is looking for a natural result. It’s the not-so-skillful work which is obvious and has given dermal filler a not-always positive reputation. You'll often hear that necks age first. But why? And what can you do?

As the skin on your neck is thinner than on your face, even the smallest decline in collagen and elastin can mean it starts to appear less firm and to develop lines and crepiness. It also has fewer sebaceous glands and hair follicles, as well as fewer stem cells which support skin renewal. People often neglect this area, focusing instead on the face, and gravity is another force against us - unfortunately, from birth our neck and its structures are subject to a downward slide (albeit gradual!).

Given the skin in this area is particularly vulnerable, be mindful of:

- avoiding sun exposure
- applying SPF
- using appropriate skin care
- minimising screen time & looking down at devices
- maintaining good posture
